MMM Hall of Fame

Comrades, we must pay homage to those Bands who stand astride the field of Metal like Collossus' - those who shine like Beacons through the murk of the mediocre, those who broke new ground with their Metal clad feet, stamping their mark forever on the pavement of Metal History.

Put forward your nominations here, with a clear polemical justification for their indictment into the MMM Hallowed Hall of Fame. Remember, the argument must be convincing, and must not be smitten down by howls of derision, or the Indictment will not stand.

AC/DC

For all their degeneration since the tragic death of Bon Scott (Worthy of his own entry here, I leave that to discussion)their body of work over the preceding decade as well as 'Back In Black' and 'For Those About To Rock' stand the test of time as simply awesome contributions to Metal & Rock Music.

In 'Highway to Hell' they produced what certainly a contender for THE greatest studio Rock Album of all time, and with 'If You Want Blood' one of the greatest 'Live' Albums as well.

Sadly, their demise since his death has proven just what a genius Bon Scott was, and the massive contribution he made to the Band. Whilst Brian Johnson has effectively filled the Vocal void left by Scott's demise, sadly none of the Band have been able to fill the gaping void in song writing terms.

Of course, since they basically became a toy metal shadow of their former selves, they have become hugely successful in the US....

Black Sabbath

It was impressive to see Sabbath inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame - though if Ozzy hadn't made a reality TV show, you have to doubt it would ever have happened.

In their day though Sabbath were one of the most innovative and Heavy of the original Metal Bands. One has to acknowledge though that it's a shame they produced some of their greatest recordings on a seriously substandard label, because it's left a legacy of great music recorded badly, which is one of the main reasons that Sabbath never rose to the level of Deep Purple or Led Zep.

In spite of this though, their early work consistantly shows in Polls for top 100 LP's, with Black Sabbath, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath & Paranoid topping the bill. Personally I think Vol 4 and Master of Reality are every bit as good as these, if not better.

Ozzy's solo musical plummet can be charted elsewhere, but just to add that Sabbath's sojourn with Ronnie James Dio, whilst seeing them predictably infested with Wizards, Gragons & Towers as a result, produced som outstanding music recorded far better than their early work - the outstanding example of this being 'Heaven & Hell'

Deep Purple

Always one of the greats - the Band that introduced me to Metal, Blues, Soul, Rock and even the best of Prog in some ways.

Never pretentious, always heavy, sometimes overblown, but really provided the core of the Metal family - so many members or former members of Purple created or played in so many Bands & Projects you get dizzy just thinking about it.

But that awesome 'Mark 2' lineup of Gillan, Glover, Paice, Blackmore & Lord is hard to better, and 'Made In Japan' is still one of the most mind-boggling Live LP's of all time. 'In Rock' is also an incredibly groundbreaking LP - the opening of Speed King is still Revolutionary today - what it must have sounded like to a young Rocker in 1970 I can't imagine.
